1. And at the top ə that list was this notion əv responding to cold calls. And there was a lot əv panic and a lot əv silence. So, as a result əv that, this workshop was created and a vast majority əv first year students here go through these workshops. So, our agenda is simple. In order to be an effectivecommunicator
regardless ʌv…if it’s planned or spontaneous, you need to have your anxiety under control.
2. So, in terms əv…whenever you communicate, part əv the listening aspect is also thinking about is … who is my audience and what are their expectations? So, what are the cultural expectations əv the audience that I'm presenting to? I just did a presentation standing in one ə these awesomeclassrooms that have all these cameras. I needed to understand the cultural expectations ʌv…that area and what they expect and what they’re willing to do when I ask them to participate.
3. I’ve heard a lot əv experts say that fear isn’t real. That is such a bunch əv bologna. Fear is so real. In fact. There are probably things that you’re afraid əv doing right now in your life, in your relationships, at work. And the fact that you’re afraid, that’s robbing you ʌv all əv the experiences that you wanna have in your life.
4. Well, what would I have to do to gain the next level … əv love, connection, belonging, or validation? In this group əv people who I want to serve, who I want to care for, who I want to contribute to?
5. That fear ʌv regret. Fear əv regret is such, such, a sort əv a…you know you wanna go beyond a boundary but the sphere əv regret stops you. ‘What if I do positive things so that I don’t have negative regrets?’ Versus saying, ‘Well, I don’t wanna do that because I’ve experienced negative regrets.’
6. I read the book for this video and you can’t say I loved it, but I can understand the appeal for a couple ə reasons.
7. I wanted to crawl under the desk. I learned something important from my mom. The value əv health. And I learned something important from my dad. The value əv science. And these two values have guided me on my track through life. And they’ve helped me appreciate an epidemic that we’re all facing. And it’s not Ebola. Instead, it is the epidemic əv unhealthy living. A half billion people worldwide are obese
8. The main selling point əv ‘Eat Pray Love’ is əv course the element əv escapism əv living by carelessly through the adventures əv someone who can essentially take a paid year off.
9. A friend ə mine came to me with a book on willingness. He said,
‘This book will change your life. Forever.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll check it out’. So, I went through it. ‘Nuh, it’s a bunch ə v psychobabble’
10. You wake up in the morning, you smoke a cigarette, you have a cup ə coffee, you smoke a cigarette. We're often just not aware əv what we think, what we feel before we act. So, my answer to Jane was to be willing, and one ə the ways, I showed her to do that, was with an exercise called "I am having the thought". One əv Jane's thoughts before she had a cigarette was, ‘I'm feeling lot ə stress right now, I really need a cigarette.’ So, I asked her to add the
phrase ‘I'm having the thought’ like this, ‘I'm having the thought that I'm feeling a lot ə stress right now I really need a cigarette.’
11. A good designer really ought to be able to answer questions like, what are the limitations əv human attention and memory? What types əv interactions build or destroy trust? What are some ə the core motivations that describe why people do what they do?
12. A host əv imaging studies suggest that these two networks working in sync is a crucial condition for creative thinking. Taken together, the evidence clearly suggests the logical realm əv the executive network and the imaginative realm əv the default mode network are closely related.
